Gay in Storybrooke
I really ship Aurora/Mulan. The gay vibe was practically pulsing off my tv and I am definitely, to judge by the amount of A/M fics on Ao3, not even close to the only one. I think everyone's pretty much assuming they're a gay couple now. And I hope the writers notice and do something about it. Because it'd be great if a gay relationship on tv could just happen organically, instead of being meticulously prepared for, either making two people gay from the start, or doing old character plus brand new person, instead, just have two random people just fricking fall in love for no reason.
Where are the gay people in Storybrooke? Aside from a vague implication that Ruby might be bi curious, they haven't shown up. Yet there are a lot of lonely single people wandering around who could probably use some love.
Rumplestiltskin and Belle, Charming and Snow,, Ashley and Sean, Leroy and that nun, those stories revolve around a shared (hetero) romantic destiny, so those people are out of the running.
Regina – she uses men for sex, but never gets into actual relationships. Not after her mother murdered her One True Love. Regina/Emma shippers are pretty strongly represented in the fandom. But then we get into the “gay character is evil” trope...
Ruby hasn't had a love interest since she ate her boyfriend.
Gepetto and Mr. French and Granny are all single, it seems but you know how most shows feel about old gay people.
Doctor Hopper? I don't know. I think “gay Jiminy Cricket” and start laughing. But hey, why not?
Baelfire/Neal? Eh...no. And I wouldn't be surprised if he has another illegitimate child out there.
Doctor Whale? He's supposed to be a womanizer but maybe since he has less of an Estrogen Brigade than Hook (see below) they could always change him a little.
Captain Hook is a ladies man. But he's also a pirate and they've never been known as picky (there are some very hot Hook/Jefferson fics). However, I think the show would want to keep him as a ladies man to draw out the UST with Emma and keep the swooning female viewership.
Jefferson- Sebastian Stan has, obviously, played gay before. Granted, Jefferson has a child, and tells Emma he "lost" his wife. Most fans assume that 1) she was Alice and 2) she's dead, probably in some traumatic incident. But they could easily write in a “she was the love of my life and I could never see myself with another woman so I turned to men” plot a la Willow. Or maybe he's just plain bisexual and desperately lonely. He's literally a professional boundary crosser and doorway opener, anyway. Even though he had fantastic chemistry with Emma and a lot of fans ship them hard, I think if you really like Jefferson, you shouldn't hope Emma will hook up with him. Emma's male love interests keep dying. Graham died- they shared a True Love's Kiss, he started to regain his memories and Regina killed him. August died- technically. His adult self died and he became a small boy again, so the August she knew no longer exists.
A few people have shipped August/Jefferson. Which up until last week was a totally reasonable idea, especially since in some deleted scenes in Hat Trick August visits Jefferson. And they have a lot in common, being part of a tiny group of people who retained their Fairy Tale memories pre Curse breaking. He's a mentally unbalanced portal jumping milliner, he's a wooden puppet biker, they love each other.
But of course, that's out now. It's also heavily implied that maybe Regina and Jefferson had some sort of prior sexual relationship, so he's probably bi, if anything. Unless they were each other's beards during an uncomfortable adolescence.
There are some new characters coming, maybe we'll get new people who are also gay.
