Kings and Hatters (OUaT Spoiler warnings)
If they had brought Kings back for multiple seasons, that might not have been the best thing after all. It could've weirdly ended up preventing these actors from getting other work.
ABC wanted to do a Mad Hatter spinoff. It is going forward but will not star the Hatter after all. Sebastian Stan couldn't do it, because he just signed a six movie deal with Marvel. Yes, you read that right, he had to turn down the chance to star in his own tv spin off because he's been hired to costar in more movies in the Captain America franchise. Yeah, it's good to be Sebastian Stan right now... and he wouldn't be able to do any of that if he was committed to the fourth season of a seriously heavy drama series. Furthermore, if “Kings” was still airing at 8 pm on Sundays, that's the same timeslot as “Once Upon a Time”. Not only would Kings find itself competing with this huge hit, that is, in some ways, a similar show (but lighter and softer*) but it would mean that OuaT would have no Mad Hatter-as-memorably-portrayed-by-Stan. Because The Big Three networks are notoriously possessive of their employees and would never allow one of the major stars of a show to have a recurring role on a rival network's show that their show competes with for ratings. Another reason Kings should've been on cable.
I do really hope he can come back once in awhile to OUaT. I hope he's not so busy that they move on without him and we never get to find out what was up with him and Regina (exes? step or half siblings obsessed with each other a la Cruel Intentions?)or how he lost his wife and why he ended up poor or whether he will hook up with Emma. And what is his full name? Jefferson what?
And I just want to get something I want out of tv for once, because nothing else is going well for me right now.
First, check out these two fics incorporating the interesting connections between Sebastian Stan's various characters.
An evil monarch, because Jefferson ticked them off, has shut him up in a luxurious mansion and taken away his child. Before that, he was imprisoned by an evil monarch (Regina tricked him and abandoned him to her mother, the Queen of Hearts) who, instead of forcing him to make a baby, forced him to make magical hats, which is pretty much the same thing I guess, metaphorically. Especially if you read certain Cora fanfics or you try to imagine Emma's attempt to explain that when Jefferson lured her into his house, drugged her and held her captive, he really did just want her to make him a magical hat.
Storybrooke actually has a King David. David Nolan, aka Prince Charming, was originally a poor shepherd living with his mother Ruth (I see what you did there) who saves the kingdom and is pushed into playing the role of prince for a cruel king. He is arranged to marry a woman named Abigail (same name as Biblical David's second wife). He later faces down a giant (although in a twist, the giant is actually afraid of humans and feels like everyone picks on him). David and the giant later become friends.

(he's being reminded of what dealing with David can be like)
In FTL, Charming is initially forced to impersonate the real prince, who looks exactly like him but is kind of an awful person (they were separated at birth). This calls back to the debate over whether or not Biblical David was a good man in over his head, or a manipulative, scheming, selfish, bastard from the start. Charming has a literal jerkass twin but almost no one else knew there were two guys so David/Charming gets blamed for a lot of stuff James did, he gets chased by a giant who survived his brother's massacre of the giants. He also has two wives- the one he was married to in FTL (Snow) and the one he is told is his wife at the start of Season One in Storybrooke (who is called Abigail in FTL and Kathryn in Storybrooke), although he never meant to end up in that situation, he spends half the first season trying to juggle two women.
One of the doors Jefferson has access to is painted with a symbol that may be the Arc of the Covenant. I wonder, does it lead to the world where Kings takes place?
And yes, “Jefferson” is a reference to the band that sings “White Rabbit”, and “Grace” is a reference to its lead singer but also... “Grace” is a theological term for when you are forgiven and given a second chance regardless of whether you deserve it or not, what saves you when nothing else could or should. I didn't make the connection until a random fanfic made it for me(a fic I can't currently find). He's searching for grace.
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come
Twas Grace that brought me safe thus far
And Grace will lead me home.
