King Malcolm of Scotland- The only surviving legitimate son of King James V of Scotland. At age six, Malcolm was sent to France to become engaged to Princess Francoise. After marrying, and upon the death of the king of France, Malcolm's mother, and the king of England, Malcolm and Francoise arrive in Scotland to assume their thrones and publicly announce his intention to pursue the English crown as well (which he believes is his birthright, it's also self defense since they keep invading and trying to kill him).

King Edmund of England- Not Cast Yet The unappreciated,lonely and somewhat abused second son of King Henry the Eighth. Edmund 's older brother, who saw him as a rival, imprisoned him for years after seizing the crown himself. As the now only surviving legitimate heir of the king, Edmund is determined to hold onto his crown. He'd also like to figure out how to talk to girls.

Queen Francoise de Valois- Clemence Posey Eldest daughter of Henry II of France. She is charming, intelligent, and artistic, but also frequently ill. She is struggling to conceive an heir and adjusting to the culture shock of life in Scotland. This causes her to make a dangerous mistake.

Lady Isobel Stewart, Countess of Moray- Adelaide Kane. Malcolm's illegitimate older sister, a widow and a Protestant, who has been serving as Regent of Scotland after the death of Marie de Guise. She is being advised by Reverend John Knox, although the friendship is souring due to, let's call it considerable trust issues on both sides.

Baroness Sabine de Poiters/"Bash"- Katherine Isabel Queen Francoise's illegitimate older sister, a female knight who is secretly studying to become a druid. Recently parted ways with her husband, Lord Kenneth, her father's former lover, who, in a bout of cruel insanity, her father forced her to marry to punish them both.

Captain Greer Norwood of Kinross- Max Lloyd Jones Malcolm's childhood friend, who fell from his position at court after his wife was imprisoned for funding Protestant terrorist activities. He joined the French Navy, then soon found himself a successful privateer. He has been welcomed back to Malcolm's court now that they've arrived in Scotland.

Lord Lachlan Fleming- Skandar Keynes A close childhood friend of Malcolm's, who is in love with the Queen. Known chiefly for his repeated ability to accidentally betray everyone.

Henrietta Stuart (Lady Darnley)- Kaya Schlodario A distant relative of both Edmund and Malcolm, she is the next in line for the Scottish throne and thus, the only person who can help Malcolm secure both countries. Although consenting to the marriage, she is wrenched from her true love, and resents Malcolm for his demanding nature. She's also a somewhat reckless and foolhardy alcoholic, who once set fire to a building because no one was paying attention to her.

Lady Stephania Narcisse- Evangeline Lilly - a powerful French noblewoman who has schemed and slept and gambled and bare knuckle boxed her way to the top. Married to the 20 year old Lord Lachlan.

Lord Aloysius Castleroy (Lady Alice Castleroy), Lady Aylee (Lord Alistair), Leith Bayard (Lettice Bayard), Princess Claude de Valois (King Claude), King Charles de Valois (Princess Charlotte), Queen Mary Tudor (King Henry the Ninth), King Edward (Princess Eleanor), Robert and William Douglas (the Ladies Roberta and Winifred), Lord Argyll (Lady Argyll) and Lady Kenna (Lord Kenneth)are all being genderswapped but I haven't made fancasting them a priority. Feel free to imagine your own preferences.

Catherine de Medici, Marie de Guise, Gideon Blackburn, John Knox, Emily Knox, John Phillipe de Valois, Rose Castleroy, George Gordon and Lord Bothwell won't be genderswapped and can be assumed to be played by their original actors.
