I think they're sweet, even though they're not my obsessive ship, but even if I didn't like them, it's still a real thing.
Yeah, it definitely has something to do with being afraid that readers will get upset if they're forced to acknowledge the presence of any part of canon they personally dislike. So a writer might put "Mentions of Karofsky" to warn away haters, and then some huge Karofsky fan is searching in his tag and this twenty five chapter multi ship epic with a plot they could care less about keeps popping up just because he has one line in it.
