I don't think we made a mistake - there are certainly worse ways to write a canon wife out.
That is so weird. Maybe part of it is that so many of them are lesbians and therefore don't get why she'd ever be with him if she could have Lana? This, btw, is one (of the many) reasons I don't ship Jen/Lana. I hate the idea of only one love. Maybe it's writing someone like Lou who I think had several loves and not all were romantic/sexual - I truly believe Andy was one of his great loves and no matter what I might write in fic, I don't believe that was ever sexual in reality.
