But every adaptation ever ignores the fact that Mary and James had some legitimate older siblings, at least one of whom was also named James, because those people are mostly superfluous. But that means that I don't have to explain why Male Mary is not named "James", just like Male Elizabeth is not named "Henry" because he has an older brother who got that dubious honor.
I'm not sure how to write Male Liz yet, but he's coming up v.v soon You have to strike this odd balance between someone who is ruthless and kind of awful but also a vulnerable woobie who you want to succeed.
So, Fem James and Knox are both approaching their moment of sleeping together with reluctant terror.
Him, because he has major issues with women and sex, but he's also in a situation out of his control and he hates that, lust is a loss of control. But he's also married, and he was devoted to Emily until this point, he never expected to find himself in this situation. He's struggling not to cheat on her with this woman who is not only much more glamorous, worldly and sophisticated (so, sexually intimidating unlike Emily who doesn't know what she's missing) but who he also sees as a deeply damaged surrogate daughter he was supposed to be guiding away from this sort of situation. He's using her for political reasons, of course but he really does want to save her from what he thinks is her problem.
Her, because she doesn't return his feelings and she's actually heartbroken and disillusioned that he took the bait when her brother pushed her into this sexpionage plan. There are like two guys in her life who don't want to sleep with her, and she just found out one of them was only pretending not to feel that way.
and Your Author isn't sure how to go about it and doesn't know how much of the sex she should show. I know a lot of readers will not want to see any of it, but a small contingent will be disappointed if they don't see it. And I don't want to kinkshame anyone by being all "of course I won't write that" and I am pretty good at "sex which is super disturbing but also weirdly hot". I think dragging it out a bit more increases the tension and anyway, Knox is a pretty slow mover and he's not great at being romantic. I mean, canonically, he's just not a mushy, demonstrative guy (which is why, although he did love Emily, I don't think she understood that). He unconsciously began courting Iz a lot earlier than either of them realized, but he did so by gifting her with a Bible marked with verses about God smiting your enemies.
