Re that whole "fics where Sebastian Stan characters are all reincarnations of each other" phenomena... no one has brought up exactly why this would happen to someone. And I figured it out- Chase Collins did it. And his spell backfired really, really, really badly. He probably liked being Carter best, because Carter had no real problems and didn't meet a bad end (yet).
Some kind of task he has to finish but never gets the chance, "help the hero, and get it right this time". And Chase Collins screwed up by being, well, pretty evil.
Sebastian Stan read for Captain America (the character) but lost out and got Bucky instead. Which is a fantastic consolation prize but... I just wonder how often that happens to him? Read for Chuck and got Carter? Like, they made Carter up just to keep him on set? I wonder if he read for David and got Jack instead? Because in an alternate universe, I actually think he'd be a kickass David. He seems like he'd be a bit closer to the way I've enjoyed picturing David long before I'd heard of this actor.

In a version of the story where they're going with the “David was an innocently - ruthless - adorable - big hearted lying opportunist and a slutty - bisexual” - theory, he would've been so.hot.in that role. He's a very good piano player too...so maybe we could've had more "David makes music" scenes.

But that guy he'd be playing can't be the show's hero. I'm not as bothered by the way it turned out as I often sound like I am, however, I think that thinking that(the hero can't have those sorts of flaws) misses a little of the point, that the beautiful outside did not always match the flawed insides. He's not an evil man, he's just human. He walks into this family, and he ruins every single person in it, just totally destroys their lives. He feels awful about some of it, but it never actually stops him.
And you can play that as if he really has no idea what he's doing, or you can play it like he kind of does...a little...because he wants to survive. Doesn't "force of adorable destruction" just really describe a Sebastian Stan character?
