It does seem like they've been using this season to fix past mistakes.

1) I think that the episode with the real estate agents who were witches was about fixing "Malleus Mallificarum". It plays on the expectations that were set up by that episode, making us expect that only women can be witches, when it turns out that the husband was one too, and just as not nice. Sam and Dean talked things over with the witches and therefore didn't have to run them through with anything phallic. And the witches were played by James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter.

2) We're now seeing ghosts from a ghost's point of view. Not that anyone was particularly angered by the show's previous treatment of ghosts, but this allows a lot more nuance.

3) "Charlie Bradbury" is a new recurring female character. Only this time, they first off cast an actress (Felicia Day) with a decent sized geek following already, and second, they established as soon as possible that she is gay, and that means she won't ever be set up as a love interest for either boy. Both of these things make it much more difficult for the audience to instantly hate her.

4) Minimizing Castiel. He was getting a little overplayed. I'm sure the whole War in Heaven thing is coming back but it's nice to have a break.
